What's in a Name?

November 8, 2011

I started this blog so that I would be able to write down the little things, but boy how the little things have added up! It is amazing how when you really start to look for the little things in life you receive the biggest blessings.

Take a name for instance. I have heard it said that a name is everything. It is the single thing that sets you apart from one person to another. Although I have heard those things before, it didn’t hit home like it did today. As I was walking through the convention center at the National Quartet Convention, a young lady passed by and said, “Hey Rebecca.” Now there was nothing out of the ordinary about her knowing my name. In fact, I may have been a little offended if she didn’t know my name. But this particular person is someone that I tend to look up to, at least musically, and I felt so special in that moment. She knew my name, and she chose to call me by it when she passed by.

I immediately thought about the Lord and countless verses came to mind. Did you know that our Lord knows the name of every star in the sky [Psalm 147:4]? He named them! Every single one! Now I am no astronomer but I know that we don’t have a clue just how many stars there are in the sky because we can’t even see them all. But get this, in our Milky Way galaxy there may be upwards of 200 billion stars, and that is just one of countless galaxies in the universe! Just to give you an even greater picture of this, take a moment to watch Francis Chan’s video entitled “The Awe Factor.”

Here’s what hit me. If God knows the name of every one of the stars in the sky, even the ones we don’t know exist, then how much more confidence is there in the fact that He knows MY name, a living, breathing, human being that He loved so much that He didn’t even spare His own son, but sent Him to die for my sin [Romans 8:32]? But He doesn’t leave this up to our questioning. We don’t ever have to guess whether He knows us by name because His precious Word says that my name is engraved in His hand [Isaiah 49:16]. If you are a child of God, having repented of your sin, placing your faith in the Lord, and the presence of the Holy Spirit is living in you, have no fear because He knows YOUR name.

I am guilty of forgetting this, but I am so thankful that He continues to remind my stubborn heart of His love each and every day – and in the most unique ways! He is so good!

What is on your heart? Tell the Lord! Just as He called you unto salvation, He has not forgotten you. He has written your name on the palm of His hand and you can rest assured it is written with divine ink, the blood of Jesus Christ, which can never be washed away. Thank you Lord!
